Captain Cook: Obsession & Discovery

Wins Leo for Best Documentary Series

Congratulations to the production team behind "Captain Cook: Obsession and Discovery" who have won a 2008 Leo Award for Best Documentary Series.

At the 10th Anniversary Gala held on Saturday May 24th in Vancouver, BC Producer Andrew Ferns was presented with the Leo on behalf of the team.

Andrew thanked the partners in the production, Film Australia, December Films and South Pacific Pictures as well as the support of the broadcasters, History Television, ABC Australia, New Zealand Prime and ARTE France/Germany, along with the BC Film, CAVCO and the Canadian Television Fund for their generous support of the project. The Leo Award is the first Canadian accolade for the series and follows Australian awards such as the Manning Clark House National Cultural Group Award in recognizing this excellent series.

Over the weekend of the Leo Awards, a total of 76 awards in Program and Craft categories were presented. Established in 1998 by the Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Foundation, the Leo Awards celebrate excellence in British Columbia film and television.

Following in wake of Cook's success, Ferns Productions is pleased to announce they will be commencing pre-production in June 2008 on a three part docu-drama entitled "Darwin's Brave New World".

Ferns Productions is reuniting with Film Australia in another Australia/Canada co-production, along with Sydney's Becker Entertainment Group. Commissioned by the CBC in Canada and Australia's ABC, "Darwin's Brave New World" will explore the events surrounding the publication of Darwin's master work, 'On The Origin of Species' and how his travels through the Southern Hemisphere were crucial in shaping his theories on Evolution and Natural Selection.

Dramatic reconstructions will take the viewer back in time to experience the agony and the ecstasy of Darwin’s struggle first hand. We’ll meet the friends and foes of Darwinism from the 19th century to the present day - from school teachers of modern Creationism’s Intelligent Design to world famous scientists - all united by the passion of their cause.

The High Definition series will be shot in locations around the world and is being delivered for broadcast in 2009, for the 150th anniversary of the first publication of 'On the Origin of Species'.
